She has also undergone 6 weeks of radiation therapy, and most recently Layla has started chemotherapy as part of a clinical trial. Tumours of the thalamus affect the movement and coordination of the body. Layla needs regular physiotherapy to help her walk, occupational therapy, ophthalmology, and speech pathology, as part of her rehabilitation.

In addition, Layla spent almost 2 weeks in intensive care, which significantly impacted on her sisters not being able to see Layla because they don’t allow children under 12. Layla’s brain tumour in the Thalamus connects the thinking and doing parts of the brain and spine. Yougou (Dad) and Clair (Mum) need to assist Layla in her daily tasks such as, dressing, bathing, managing medications, appointments, balance while walking, and pain management.

Layla’s family is critical to her cancer journey. The kind of focus, care, and support Layla needs requires all members of the family, including her sisters. The whole family moved to Sydney in July 2024 to be with Layla. Her sisters attend Hospital School and the family live at Ronald McDonald House together to be close to the Sydney Children’s Hospital.
